The year 2002 marked the 50th anniversary of the Accession of Her Majesty the Queen to the throne and celebrated half a century of the Queen's important role in the affairs of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. This was a unique occasion in the history of the nation and provided citizens of this country and the Commonwealth nations with the opportunity to thank Her Majesty for 50 years of dedicated service. It also provided organizations and governments throughout the world with an opportunity to pay tribute to Her Majesty and to celebrate this unique event.
Looking back over the past 50 years, the Golden Jubilee celebration was a time to reflect on the key advances and developments in science, industry and commerce that have had significant impact over this important period, as well as to record the ways in which our lives in general have changed. The event was a time to chronicle the changes in our culture and lifestyle as well as to recall triumphant sporting achievements and media landmarks. It also afforded the opportunity of reviewing where we stand today and of looking at the role that the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth will play in the future.
